A great variety of animal and plant species has adapted to a sometimes perilous life on this shifting barrier island located along the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. With sections of Assateague managed and protected by the National Park Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and the state of Maryland, Assateague offers a unique opportunity to  observe plants and animals of the Mid-Atlantic coast in an undeveloped, natural environment.
