Exploring the Unknown...

Did you ever wonder what it would be like if you were the astronaut of a rocket that is taking off with a new crew and you have no idea where you are going to end up, or if you will even make it somewhere alive?  Think about how you would feel... scared?   excited?   foolish?   in danger?

What reasons would you have that would make you want to do it?

Some of your feelings might be the same as those of the early European explorers who discovered many places around the world.   During this web activity, you will get to find out some interesting things about the explorers and where they went.  You will also then get to create something brand new with what you find out!

Click on the astronaut below after you've  fastened your safety belts and are sure you're strapped in tight because it's time to TAKE OFF!  If you have a successful blast off, click on the X in the right corner of the little screen and that brings you back to here so you can read the directions for Activity 1.  If the pictures aren't moving when you come back, click on REFRESH at the top of your screen.  Click HERE when you get back for Activity 1.

Activity 1--Directions

You have started learning about an explorer from one of the European countries and have done some research on the Internet to complete your "Explorer Profile" page.  Today, you will get to find out some more interesting things about your explorer, his life, and his adventures.  You will also need to find a web site that has a picture of your explorer on it because you will be using it for another activity.

You should already know which country your explorer came from.  You will be able to find sites about him under his country and flag on the chart below.  Click on the name of the country or the picture of the flag to get to sites about the explorers from that country.  Then find the name of your explorer and the sites for him will be listed underneath his name.  Click on the URL of a site and you will automatically be taken there.  When you are done using that site, just click the BACK arrow at the top left of your screen and you'll be brought back to the list of sites so you can click to go to another one.

Make sure to remember which site has a picture of your explorer on it and record that site on the bottom of your "Explorer Profile" page.

When you are done with your "Explorer Profile" page, click on the BACK button and then continue with Activity 2 on this site.

Activity 4--Directions

You are now going to put all your work into a Power Point presentation so that everyone will be able to learn about your explorer.  After reading these directions, you are to open up the Power Point program on your computer and choose New Slide Show.  You will be making 4 slides.  The first one will have the picture of your explorer on it and his name.  Slides 2 and 3 will have paragraphs on them that tell about your explorer, his life, and his travels.  (You are writing to inform so make sure you remember the things you need in a writing to inform paragraph.)  The 4th slide will be the one that you created in Activity 3 plus your name and the date.  You may add appropriate graphics from the program and animation and sound IF it adds to your presentation.  After you have finished your Power Point, save it to your desk and raise your hand for the teacher to see it before you take out your disk.  These will be graded with the rubric that you have seen.  If you have any questions, please ask the teacher.
