This webquest can be completed at anytime during the school year. Students will work individually and in groups of three to five to understand the entire process of preparing documents for getting a job. Students will research the want ads from the Internet, prepare cover letters and resumes, hold mock interviews, and prepare other correspondence relating to employment.
Students will design and produce word processing documents with emphasis given to the job application process. At the end of this project students will demonstrate their understanding of the contents of this unit by producing a portfolio of job application documents that includes the following:
To accomplish the task, the students will complete the following steps in the order listed below:
1. The Career Key, a career assessment on-line tool is a short interactive survey that will identify your strengths in a particular career path. (Click on the Career Key hyper link and follow the directions given on-line.)
2. The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a nationally recognized source of career information, designed to provide valuable assistance to individuals making decisions about their future work lives. (Search various jobs from the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Find a job you want, then use the word processor to describe briefly in report format: the significant points, nature of the work, working conditions, training and other qualifications, and earnings.)
3. Want Ads. Search the following links for a job relating to the skills you are learning in this class. Maryland's Job Bank, or CAREERspan. (Print one copy of the ad from the web page)
4. Resume. Resumes are one of the most important deciding factors in determining whether the job seeker gets an interview with the employer. Think of yourself as the product, and the employer as the buyers. Your resume must interest the employer in what you have to offer. Resumes are screening devices to determine whom employers are interested in interviewing. The resume represents a personal
