MARYLAND COUNTIES

Maryland has 23 counties and one independent city, Baltimore City.  Each county has its very own features which make it special.  Back to table.

MARYLAND REGIONS

The state of Maryland is unique in that it contains land in three separate regions.  The Westernmost part of the state is mountainous, has a cooler climate, and is still very rural.  The middle part of the state is located on the Piedmont Plateau and contains the Fall Line, an area where the elevation drops off and natural waterfalls are created along our rivers.  The Eastern Shore is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and is actually separated into land east and west of the Chesapeake Bay.  Life for people in each of these three regions is extremely different in many ways.

MARYLAND TRANSPORTATION

The C & O Canal played an important part in Maryland History.  Today, you can take a scenic walk down the tow path.

The B & O Railroad, now the CSX railway, was also important in our history.

The first form of transportation from Baltimore to western Maryland was the National Road.
Much of this road remains and you can still travel west on Route 40.
